Risk Assessment & the Prevention of Childhood Caries

Are you concerned about your child’s oral health? You should be. Studies show that about 1 out of 5 children ages 2 to 5 years old has developed dental cavities (1). If not prevented early, complications may arise in later years and the need for more extensive dental work might be needed.

Caries Management by Risk Assessment or CAMBRA is an approach used by dentists to assess a patient’s risk of dental caries, or cavities, in order to provide early preventive measures or treatments necessary. Through CAMBRA, your dentist can assess your child’s risk via different factors such as diet, oral habits, medications, and other indicators so they can prepare a customized plan of healthy oral habits which your child should diligently follow.

As a parent, if you want your child to practice good oral hygiene, you must lead by example. Let brushing, flossing, and quick cleanliness checks afterwards be part of your daily routine. Even better, brush their teeth for them to help teach them proper brushing techniques. Regular flossing keeps your teeth free from lodged particles and bacteria in between the teeth and under the gumline. Too much sugar also decays the tooth enamel, so limit their consumption of candies and soda. Also, keep your child’s bedroom free from bottled juices or milk, offering only water at night instead.

To ensure that your child’s oral health is in great condition, a regular checkup with the dentist is a must. You can bring your child as young as 12 to 24 months old for an initial screening. With our experienced clinicians and friendly staff, rest assured that your child will have a positive experience.
