Pregnancy: How it Affects Oral Health

Your oral health is extremely important during pregnancy. Soon-to- be moms experience changes in their hormones, especially progesterone, which is responsible for the growth of bacteria linked to gingivitis. There is a medical term known as pregnancy gingivitis. Signs of Pregnancy gingivitis are:

  • Reddening of the Gums
  • Swelling of Gums
  • Bleeding of Gums

If left untreated, it could result in gum disease and even affect your baby’s health. Research shows that the bacteria which causes gum inflammation can enter the blood stream and affect the fetus, potentially resulting in premature births.

Another common occurrence in pregnant women is morning sickness which is associated with frequent vomiting. Unknown to many, it can cause erosion of your tooth enamel due to the strong stomach acids left in the mouth.

To help minimize these effects, good oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing must be practiced. Intake of sweets must also be limited since they promote increased plaque and tooth decay. Of course, a regular checkup with your dentist is also safe and helpful for your pregnancy.
