How to Treat Receding Gums

How to Treat Receding Gums?

Did you know that more than 50% of people aged 18 to 64 years old have a recession in one or more areas of their gums?

Gum recession happens when your gums pull away from your teeth, exposing more of the tooth and its root. It gradually happens over time but can occur at any age. Common causes include gum disease, brushing too hard, a misaligned bite, grinding your teeth and smoking. Since our tooth root does not have a protective barrier, being exposed makes it sensitive to hot and cold temperatures and prone to abrasion and decay.

Treatments vary depending on the cause. In severe and advanced cases, your dentist may advise you to undergo a gum graft surgery. The traditional method involves the use of tissues from your palate or a donor and attaches it where the gums have receded. A modern method, the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), involves the use of special tools to correct your gum line. Since this technique is much less traumatic to your mouth and usually suture free, patients can experience a faster recovery with visible results.

To know if you are suitable for PST, please contact Ericson Dental today. Dr. Ericson can assess your condition and help you take steps to achieve a beautiful and healthy gum line.
