Dentures are an appliance used to replace some or even all missing teeth. Removable, a denture is an appliance used to replace teeth and restore one’s smile. There are several types of dentures, one being a “full” dentures and the other a “partial” denture. Depending on oral health status (having lost all of your natural teeth) from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, the replacement of missing teeth will exponentially benefit your appearance as well as your health. Denture technology now is state-of-the-art and now they are one with you mouth! Making it easier to eat, speak, and do things you would have trouble doing without teeth.
Partial dentures are needed when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. When this is the case, a fixed bridge replaces one or more teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the space. Thereby attaching artificial teeth to them. This “bridge” that is created is then cemented into it’s final placement. A partial denture does not only fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it also inhibits other teeth from moving position. A precision partial denture is removable. It used internal attachments versus clasps that attach to the nearby crowns. This appliance is a very natural-looking.
Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Made after the teeth have already been removed and gum tissue has started to heal, the conventional denture is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. Not similar to conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made previously and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. This means, the patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing process. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal which poses a disadvantage of immediate dentures. Whereas, conventional dentures require more adjustments to attain the best fitting during the healing process. Generally, immediate dentures should only be considered as a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.
Of course there are alternatives, dental implants can also be used to support the cemented bridges, which int turn, eliminates the need for a denture. However this option, the cost is usually greater, but the implants and bridges act as well as feel like real teeth. Dental implants are becoming the alternative to dentures, but not everyone is a candidate for implants! It’s best to schedule a consultation to receive the best solution for you.
